5G Geopolitics and the Philippines: The Huawei Controversy

The use of Huawei 5G in the Philippines has brought into question the interoperability of countries using Huawei, and those that don’t. This case study examines how these technological tensions may impact U.S.-Philippines ties, FDI inflows, and the country's upcoming 2022 presidential elections

This 3,405-word case study was the largest independent research project I undertook during my time at APF. It is a critical analysis of the controversial use of Huawei 5G equipment in the Philippines in the context of U.S.-China tensions in Southeast Asia. It examines the impact and potential risks Huawei 5G usage has on U.S.-Philippine military relations, the digital economy, and domestic politics with the upcoming 2022 presidential elections.

The case study is published on the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada website and can be found here.
