In the Federal Budget 2022 Report, Deloitte's Future of Canada Centre (FCC) breaks down the macro socioeconomic and business implications of the 2022 federal budget. As an analyst with the FCC, I was responsible for researching and drafting the defence & security, healthcare, aged care, and Indigenous files.
From this experience, I was able to gain three key achievements:
Professional development: With most of my prior work experience focusing on Asian international affairs and policy, developing my exposure to Canadian policy and politics is a key goal for my time at the FCC. By analyzing the federal budget, I gained insight on Canadian policy at a federal level.
Creative thinking and analysis: This project required me to begin drafting analyses on policy issues not yet confirmed. We began drafting nearly two full weeks before the budget was released, so we could not be sure what budget items would be included. Attempting to forecast likely line items involved careful research of existing news on potential budget items, as well as creative thinking around what policy issues were most relevant for Canada.
Time management: When the federal budget was finally released, we had just under 48 hours to make edits to adjust for errors in forecasting and confirm final $ figures. Because of the tight time pressure, I developed experience in time management and working under pressure while remaining focused. By coordinating and communicating with my co-workers, we successfully completed the required edits and the report was published a few days after the budget release.
